    Notas:

    'n Groot "dankie" aan John Wilmer, wat die Essequebo-Demerary-koerante getranskribeer het en aanlynbesikbaar gestel het. Asook aan Peter Gundry, wat Cornelis se Britse testament opgespoor het.

    Geboorte:
    Cornelis van Dyk is ongeveer 23-26 Junie 1767 gebore in Amsterdam, Nederland as die derde van agt kinders.

    Ander as in Suid-Afrika, is kinders slegs 'n dag of drie na hulle geboorte gedoop, dus kan ons aanvaar dat Cornelis se geboorte baie kort voor sy doop plaasgevind het.

    Beroep:
    Ek vermoed dat hierdie rekord nie "ons" Cornelis betref nie, maar vir die sekerheid plaas ek dit hier. Cornelis was in Oktober 1777 slegs 10 jaar oud, wat hom báie jonk maak vir 'n hooploper. (Hooplopers was ongeoefende, lae-rang matrose.)

    Dit is egter nie ontmoontlik nie - aldus Cornelis self het hy in 1779 (dus met 12) by die VOC aangesluit. Die enigste rekords wat ek kon vind is egter 1777 of 1780 en by geen van die twee is dit duidelik of dit wel of nie die korrekte Cornelis is nie, dus plaas ek beide hier met notas.

    Aldus die bron het hierdie betrokke Cornelis van Dijk op 27 Mei 1778 aan die Kaap in diens van die V.O.C. getree (op land).

    Beroep:
    Aldus die bron - Requesten or Memorials (sien bronne) het Cornelis in 1779 in diens van die Kompanjie getreë as hooploper. Die inligting word gegee in 'n verslag van 'n versoek van Cornelis aan die Kompanjie in 1793.

    Ek het geen rekord kon vind van 'n Cornelis van Dijk wat in 1779 in diens van die V.O.C. getree het as hooploper nie.

    As hy wel in diens was van die VOC, sou dit byna seker vir die Kamer Amsterdam gewees het - al sy ander indiensnemings was by hulle.

    Beroep:
    Hier is weer 'n rekord waarvan ek nie seker is of dit die regte Cornelis is nie - Cornelis van Dijk was 'n algemene naam en Amsterdam 'n groot plek.

    Daar is egter 'n paar leidrade wat my laat dink dit is moontlik die korrekte persoon.

    Die rede vir "uitdiensttreding" word gee as "absent bij afvaart". Dit kan beteken dat hy nie opgedaag het toe die skip vertrek het nie, óf dat hy op 'n ander skip geplaas is, óf dat daar besluit is dat hy nie geskik is om saam te gaan nie.

    Gesien dat die VOC in hierdie tyd reeds baie verswak het, spekuleer ek dat hulle miskien makliker anderkant toe gekyk het as jong seuns wou aansluit. Dit kan wees dat die persoon wat op die dag by die skip gestaan het toe tog besluit het dat hierdie jong laatie nie saam mag gaan nie. Of hulle het hom op 'n ander skip geplaas. Of het sy ouers hom teengehou. Of, of, of - daar is baie redes waarom die wel die korrekte Cornelis is, wat bloot nie op daardie dag met hierdie skip gereis het nie.


    Beroep:
    Hier is weer 'n rekord met "absent bij afvaart" as rede vir uitdienstreding. Saam met die ander, skep dit wel 'n bietjie die beeld van 'n jong seun wat kanse probeer vat waar hy dit kry - maar dat as die groot dag aanbreek, hy óf nie op die boot toegelaat word nie, óf iemand anders hom teenhou.

    Ek is hier wel seker dat, indien dit ons Cornelis betref, hy heel waarskynlik nie saamgegaan het nie (i.p.v. op 'n ander skip geplaas is) - hy sou moeilik betyds teruggewees het vir sy volgende reis van Nederland na Suid-Afrika in April 1783 (en vir laasgenoemde reis is ons wel seker dat hy op die skip geklim het).


    Beroep:
    Hier verskyn weereens 'n vreemde aantekening in die skeepsoldyboek (sien afbeelding) wat ek nog nie 100% kon ontsyfer en vertaal het nie. Dit moet wel duidelik wees dat Cornelis tog sommige van hierdie "het hy of het hy nie"-reise meegemaak het - teen 1788 was hy reeds aangestel as kaptein-luitenant van die Duifje.

    Ek vermoed dat hy hierdie reis wel meegemaak het, al was dit slegs gedeeltelik. Een van die redes hiervoor is dat die ander konstabelsmaat op die skip, Johan David Piton (uit Mannheim, Duitsland) goeie vriende geword het met Cornelis. Hy sou later een van die getuies wees by die doop van Cornelis se eerste kind.

    Beroep:
    Die derde waak is die persoon wat derde verantwoordlik is vir die navigasie. Daar kon meerdere persone op dieselfde skip wees met hierdiede funksie.

    Aldus die bron het Cornelis weer met die skip teruggereis na Nederland.

    Beroep:
    Hierdie tog het van Texel, Nederlands tot aan die Kaap gegaan (en nie verder geseil na Indonesië nie).

    Beroep:
    Terwyl die Duifje aan die Kaap geanker was, het die hawemeester voorgestel dat Cornelis van Dijk aangestel word as die Kaptein-Luitenant van die skip.

    Cornelis sou egter nie weer met die Duifje vaar nie, en het in 1790 met die Meerwijk na Nederland teruggekeer.


    Ander:
    Cornelis van Dijk het met die skip Meerwijk terug na Nederland gereis. Dit wil nie voorkom asof hy enige rang aan boord van hierdie skip gehad het nie.

    Beroep:
    Cornelis het aan die Kaap afgeklim en nie die tweede helfte van die tog na Batavia meegemaak nie.

    Ander:
    Die skip Sterreschans was byna aan die Kaap, waarna dit verder sou gaan na Batavia. Cornelis het die raad versoek om hom aan te stel as kaptein van die skip en ook toestemming gevra om sy vrou, Catharina Pieterse, met hom na Batavia te neem.

    Dit wil lyk of die Raad hiermee ingestem het. Die Sterreschans het egter minder as 'n maand later, op 20 Mei 1793 aan die kus van Kaap gestrand.

    Ander:
    Cornelis het die raad versoek om die transportgeld wat hy vir Anna Catharina Pietersz. se reis na Batavia betaal het, aan hom terug te betaal.

    Ander:
    Na die Sterreschans skipbreuk gely het, het Cornelis siek geword. Hy betreur dat hy nou sonder werk en in armoede gelaat is. Hy versoek die Kompanjie om hom weer in diens te neem, met die rang "Kaptein ter See".

    Dit wil lyk asof die Raad hom tegemoetgekom het.

    Beroep:
    Alhoewel Cornelis in November 1793 bevorder is tot "gesaghebber" van die skip "De Ster", is die nie duidelik of hy ooit met die boot geseil het nie. Die laaste togte van die skip is as volg:

    Die skip het Nederland op 9 April 1793 verlaat en op 7 Julie 1793 aan die Kaap geland. (Cornelis het op die 18de Julie die Raad gevra om hom weer in diens te neem.)

    Op 4 Augustus het die outoriteite die Ster na Delagoabaai gestuur, om te soek na die vermiste skip Demerary. Die Engelse het egter die Ster ingeneem (waarskynlik tydens hierdie tog, alhoewel dit nie uitdruklik vermeld word nie).

    Sou Cornelis ten tye hiervan op die skip gewees het? Dit is nie duidelik nie.

    Cornelis het aansoek gedoen om ontslaan te word as aanvoerder van die skip "De Star" en het toestemming gevra om saam met sy vrou terug te keer Europa toe, met behoud van sy loon.

    Beroep:
    Teen 1804 was Cornelis reeds 'n handelaar wat goedere vanuit Engeland na Guyana (toe die kolonies Demerary en Essequibo) in Suid-Amerika vervoer het.

    Na die opheffing van die V.O.C. is dit moontlik dat Cornelis vir die Britse East India Company of 'n ander handelsmaatskappy gaan werk het

    Sy gesin was teen hierdie tyd waarskynlik woonagtig in Londen, Engeland.

    Uit die veilingsadvertensies, weet ons dat Cornelis die kaptein/kommandant van die skip Sir John Borlase Warren was in 1804.

    Kaptein/kommandant is ook range in die Engelse marine. Dit is nie duidelik of met "commander" in die veilingsberigte verwys word na die Britse rang nie, en of dit slegs gebruik word as algemene term om aan te dui dat Cornelis in beheer van die skip was.

    Die skip Sir John Borlase Warren is ook gebruik om in 1806 die Kaapse Kolonie aan te val. Cornelis was nie deel van hierdie aanval nie.

    Uit die veilingsadvertensies leer ons dat Cornelis in April 1806 in beheer van die snou Hercules was. 'n Snou is 'n soort skip. In sommige berigte word daar na die Hercules as 'n brik verwys, wat moontlik was aangesien die ontwerp van beide mettertyd sodanig verander het, dat daar sterk ooreenkomste was. Sulke skepe was 'n "snou-brik" genoem, maar later het die term "snou" in onbruik verval en is slegs "brik" gebruik.

    BOAT STOLEN.
    Run Away from on board the Hercules, C. van Dyk, Master, on the night of the 19th instant, Three Sailors, with a small Boat belonging to the said vessel. The bottom of the Boat is painted black, with a yellow streak above, and a black one over that. The inside is tarred to the rising, and above that yellow; black thwarts, yellow seats, stern sheets lead colour, and four black oars, about 8 feet long, with yellow blades. Whoever will give such information to the Office of this Paper, as may lead to the recovery of the above boat, will be handsomely rewarded.

    Uit die koerantartikels leer ons dat Cornelis in 1807 en 1808 in beheer was van 'n brik genaamd Triton.

    Eienaardigheid: daar is 'n 1969-roman met die naam The Triton Brig, deur Dudley Pope.

    Capt. C. Van Dyk having been disappointed by some of his Friends not shipping their promised Produce in time, is obliged to wait until the next Convoy, when he is determined to sail full or not. He has room for about 200 Bales of Cotton, with which he hopes to be speedily supplied.
    He at the same time requests all those who have any Demands against him in his prive[accent], or on account of the Ship Triton, to come forward within the course of a fortnight and settle the same. His Domicilium is at the House of C. H. De Munnick, Esq.
    N.B. He also hopes that those who are indebted to him will come forward with payment.

    Alhoewel hy reeds oorlede is, verskyn hy nog op sy seun Harry Stoe se dooprekord, met sy beroep as "mariner".

    Woonplek:
    Cornelis was teen hierdie tyd reeds oorlede, maar dit wil voorkom asof sy gesin eers ná sy dood na Guyana getrek het. Moontlik omdat hy daar eiendom besit het, terwyl hul woning in Engeland gehuur was. Ons weet wel hulle was in 1815 daar woonagtig.

    THE Undersigned are extremely sorry to announce the confirmation of the death of Capt. C. Van Dyk, of the ship Granger, late from this River; which melancholy event took place in France, in consequence of the severe wound he received in the thigh, in the action between said ship, and the French privateer L'Aigle, on the 1st of May last. He leaves a disconsolate widow and three children, bitterly to lament his loss.
