170 | Andries Nicolaas se herkoms verander n.a.v. die bron wat jy naslaan. Sommige, soos die Suid-Afrikaanse Familieregister (8:689), vermeld dat hy 'n aparte stamvader is, afkomstig van "Holland". Ander, soos die Suid-Afrikaanse Geslagregisters (2:263), vermoed 'n Suid-Afrikaanse herkoms, maar is onseker oor sy ouers (en stel Jurgen Johannes van Dyk en Christina Geertruy Niemand voor, wat sou beteken dat hy uiteindelik met sy suster getroud was). Andries Nicolaas is in wel in Suid-Afrika gebore, sy huweliksinskrywing (2.11.1806 te Stellenbosch) vermeld Cabo de Goede Hoop en ook sy testament (KAB MOOC 7/1/300, 1853) verklaar Anderies Nicolaas Van deijk Sinior, en Mejuffrouw Johanna Cathariena van dijk, beide van dezin Lande Geboorin. Dat dit hier om 'n "nuwe" stamvader gaan, is dus inkorrek. Maar wié was dan sy ouers? Op sy skoonmoeder se sterfkennis (KAB MOOC 1073/1835) word gemeld dat haar dogter Johanna getroud is met Andries Nicolaas van Dyk, Andries se seun (And.'s son). Sy pa was dus ook 'n Andries van Dyk. Ons vermoede is dat dit hier om 'n onegte kind gaan van Andries Christiaan van Dyk - hy is die enigste Andries van Dyk wat in daardie tyd op die regte ouderdom was om 'n kind te hê. (Die enigste ander kandidaat is Jurgen van Dijk en Andries Christiaan se pa - ook genaamd Andries - maar hy was teen hierdie tyd reeds oorlede.) Daar is egter geen inskrywing vir 'n Andries Nicolaas van Dyk in ongeveer 1780 nie. Daar is wel 'n onegte kind met die naam Andries Nicolaas op 26 September 1779 in Stellenbosch gedoop. Die moeder word gelys as Johanna Catharina Meijhuijzen, maar dit is hoogs onwaarskynlik dat sy die moeder was. Johanna Catharina Meijhuizen was die moeder van Christina Margaretha Geertruy Niemand - Andries Christiaan se skoonsuster en uiteindelik Andries Nicolaas se skoonmoeder. Die betrokke takke van die Meijhuijzens, Niemands, Van Dyks en ook 'n Swart-tak het blykbaar naby mekaar gewoon en met mekaar gesosialiseer. Daar is verskeie huwelike tussen hierdie families. Johanna Catharina Meijhuijzen was 'n 60-jaar oue weduwee toe die onegte Andries Christiaan gebore is. Dit is hoogs onwaarskynlik dat sy teen hierdie tyd nog 'n kind gebaar het, maar eerder dat sy aangebied/besluit het om die kind as hare te doop - moontlik om 'n ongehude moeder (en haar familie) verleentheid te spaar. Haar 1771-testament (KAB MOOC 7/1/28 60/1781) verwys ook na twee ander aangenome kinders: Johannes Andries Swart en Michiel Hendrik Heyns. Die getuies op hierdie onegte Andries Nicolaas se doop, was: Nicolaas Swart en Jacomina Bijer: 'n getroude paartjie en vriende van die familie Jurgen van Dijk en Christina Geertruij Margaretha Niemand: Me. Meyhuizen se dogter en skoonseun en Andries Christiaan se broer en skoonsuster. Die laaste getuie op die doop was: Andries van Dyk. Soos reeds bo genoem, is Andries Christiaan die enigste Andries wat op hierdie tydstip pas. Dit lyk dus waarskynlik dat hierdie onegte Andries Nicolaas en Andries Nicolaas van Dyk dieselfde persoon is, waarvan Andries Christiaan die vader is. Ons vermoede word versterk deur die twee volgende feite: Op 8.11.1787 het 'n ongetroude Dina Margaretha Swart (die dogter van bogenoemde Nicolaas Swart) haar onegte kind, Johannes Andries, laat doop. Sy het beweer dat die vader Andries Christiaan van Dyk is. (Wat aandui dat Andries Christiaan ten minste een keer 'n ongehude vrou swanger gemaak het, 'n tweede (vroeër) keer, is dus meer moontlik.) Op die doop van Andries Nicolaas en Johanna Catharina se eerste seun, Jurie Johannes, op 5.10.1807, verskyn die volgende getuies: Michiel Burgert van Dyk (Johanna Catharina se broer) Christina Geertrui Niemand (Johanna se ma) Maria Magdalena van Dyk (Johanna se suster) en Andries Christiaan van Dyk. Om ons vermoedens te bevestig, het ons 'n DNS-toets bestel vir 'n afstammeling van Andries Nicolaas. Ons is reeds in besit van 'n kopie van die DNS-uitslae van 'n afstammeling van Joost. As die twee ooreenkom, sal dit bewys dat Andries Nicolaas 'n nasaat van Joost van Dyk, en dus ook Andries Christiaan van Dyk, is. 191 | Vergete helde - Die Witterivier verdrinkings As kind het my ouers by geleentheid op naweke ons uitgevat om te gaan piekniek hou en braai. Dit was gedurende die 70's in die Boland en ons het op Wellington gebly. Een van die "braaiplekke" was onderandere "1ste & 2de tol" bo in Bainskloofpas, so 'n paar kilometer anderkant die "spookhuis"se afdraai. Ek onthou die geswem in die kuile, my Pa se braaivleis en dat byna elke groot klip wat ons kon omrol, 'n skerpioen onder hulle gehad het. Min het ek geweet watter tragedie daar afgespeel het byna 80 jaar tevore! Ek gaan nie hier die storie oorvertel van hoe dit gebeur het nie, Lawrence G. Green het in een van sy briljante boeke, Beyond the City Lights (bl.98-101) dit vasgevang. (Klip op die skakel onder vir die kort verhaal) Wat ek wel wil oordra uit 'n genealogiese oogpunt is hoe ek tehore gekom het van Lourens Charl VAN DYK en sy jonger broer, Francois Johannes VAN DYK. Met my navorsing oor stamvader Evert van Dyk se nageslagte, het ek onderandere op 'n grafteen afgekom in een van Ceres se begraafplase met die volgende beskrywing: Ter Nagedachtenis Lourens C. en Frans J. Van DYK Strevende om anderen te redden zijn zij omgekomen in de Witte rivier op den 23sten Mei 1895 in den ouderdom van 23 en 21 jaren. Wel... dit het dadelik my aandag getrek en ek moes net meer uitvind! Die offisiële registers kon niks oplewer nie, so ek het begin Sterftekennise soek. Nou ja, vir die wat nie weet nie, die afstand tussen Ceres en Wellington is so 50km, maar daar is groot berge tussen in. Ek het groot geword met die gedagte dat aan "ons" kant van die berg het ons Wellington en Paarl gehad (Kaapstad het nie getel nie) en aan "hulle" kant, Ceres, Tulbagh, Wolseley en bietjie verder Worcester. Dieselfde Witterivier waarvan die grafsteen praat, ontstaan in die eintste berge, maar die rivier kom uit na aan Wolesley en Ceres se kant. Onthou ook dat ek by daai stadium nog glad nie die boek van LG Green gelees het nie en ek het verkeerdelik aangeneem die manne het verdrink iewers onderkant Ceres in die rivier. Nadat ek deur Ceres, Tulbagh, Wolseley en ook Worcester se gewone bronne gesoek het, kon ek NIKS vind nie en wend my toe maar na van die Facebook groepe. Daar vind ek toe uit dat 'n groep-lid dink hy het so 'n storie gelees in een van L. Green se boeke en jouwerklikwaar, daar staan dit groot geskryf: Die kinders was by Hugenote Kollege op Wellington! Hulle het daardie selfde dag vertrek met die skip "Huis te Zilverstein" vanaf Texel, Nederland. Die skip was onderweg na Batavia (Indonesië), met 'n stop halverwege aan die Kaap. Soldate het in prinsipe geen take aan boord gehad nie, hulle was slegs daar om die Nederlandse vestiginge oorsee te bewaak en te verdedig. Hulle kon wel tydens die reis ingeset word as gevaar gedreig het. Daar was ook ten alle tye 'n soldaat voor die kajuit en voor die konstabel se kamer gestasioneer. Die broers het geen maandbrief gehad nie, dus het hulle niemand agtergelaat wat hulle nodig geag het om van hul loon uitbetaal te kry nie. Hulle het wel 'n skuldbrief gehad waarmee hulle self vooruitbetaal is.
